HERRIMAN -- Prep football season is coming up even faster than the NFL or college seasons, and Herriman High School's first football team says they're ready.

"This is tremendous. I mean, it's like being a little kid again and waiting for Christmas," says head coach Larry Wilson.

The Herriman team is made up mostly of players from Bingham High School, Riverton High School and Copper Hills High School. But these Herriman Mustangs are excited to start something new.

"I'm excited. The facility is great, all this new stuff. It's gonna be fun," says running back Tazz Everett.

"Oh, man. I'm way excited. I can't even wait," says lineman Josh Wiseman.

Herriman is the eighth Utah high school to open since 2007. The average win total for the other seven teams in their first year: 1.

The Mustangs will play a 5A schedule in the same region as defending state champion Bingham, but this team is ready for the challenge.

"Absolutely. They are looking forward to it. This is their opportunity. And if you're truly a competitor, that's what you want, you want to play the best," Wilson says.

"We have an excellent coaching staff," Wiseman says. "You know, I think we're gonna be pretty legit and we're gonna be very competitive."

"We're ready to shock the state," says lineman Nakita Lealao.

The Mustangs will play the first game in school history on Aug. 20 against Hillcrest High School.
