Alex Cabrero ReportingA proposal to bring a small private airstrip to Summit County has some residents complaining. There are two airports within about 30 minutes of Park City, which is why many are wondering why a third one is needed.
This project at the upscale Promontory Ranch housing development is still in the very early stages, and the developers would need Summit County's permission first.
The runway would be just off Interstate 80 and Highway 40 in Summit County, which is about a mile away from any homes.
The Promontory development is talking about building a private runway so its residents could land their planes closer to home. "It's nice that folks have their own planes and want to have a little more convenience, but I think it's unfortunate they're not taking a broader perspective," said Jeremy Ranch resident Tom Farkas. He said developers should consider is increased air and noise pollution, as well as other environmental impacts.
The director of the Promontory Development, Rich Sonntag, said residents wouldn't even hear the planes, and only a few of them would use the airport. He also gave a statement, part of which reads, "Our relationship with the local community, our dedication to the land, and our commitment to conservation is extremely important to Promontory." Sonntag said he would like to hear from Promontory residents before going forward with anything.
Summit County Commissioner Sally Elliott says before anything is done, approval must come from the planning commission. She said, "After they've completed all their fact-finding and discussion, they'll send a recommendation to the county commission."
