In the last few years, sustainable or green design and products have become a top priority. Many business and home owners are seeking to be more environmentally friendly in any way possible.
Mark Baugh and Kevin Orme are helping with this process through their Ogden-based company, Matrix Manufacturing. Matrix is the exclusive distributor for the Polymax polystyrene densification system, a machine that recycles Styrofoam.
The patented technology for the machine was developed at the Huntsman Environmental Research Center at Utah State University. The team working on the project, which included Mark, had recently developed a system for removing polystyrene foam from fast-food waste and discovered a need to densify polystyrene foam. Traditional bailers did not work well for polystyrene foam because of the springiness of the foam. The team went to work on the problem and the result was the technology used to create the Polymax polystyrene densification system.
This technology is exclusively licensed to Matrix Manufacturing, which Mark and Kevin started in 2005. Matrix has been placing its Polymax systems nationwide with large companies that produce Styrofoam, waste services and many city municipalities.
Kevin, who recently graduated from Utah State University with a master's degree in industrial technology, says Matrix also provides general fabrication for local businesses and has worked extensively with the hydraulics industry in Salt Lake City. The partners would like to secure jobs that require more development. They also hope to diversify into several other areas and increase their local customer base.
