WILLIAMSBURG, Va., Oct 4, 2005 (UPI via COMTEX) -- The College of William and Mary in Virginia has named U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor as its chancellor.
O'Connor succeeds former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger in the post. Other predecessors include Chief Justice Warren Burger, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and two U.S. presidents, George Washington and John Tyler.
Kissinger announced this summer that he was stepping down after five years as chancellor.
While the post is mostly advisory, O'Connor said in a statement that she "looks forward to being an active part of the campus community."
William and Mary is the second oldest college in the country.
