LAYTON, Utah (AP) -- Layton's mayor has filed for bankruptcy, saying he's a casualty of a bad economy.

Steve Curtis listed $386,000 in liabilities at U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Salt Lake City, including tens of thousands of dollars in credit card bills.

Curtis has mortgages or liens totaling $246,000 on a house worth $26,000 less than that.

The 55-year-old Curtis hasn't had steady, full-time employment since retiring from Qwest Communications after 29 years in 2006.

He makes $21,800 as mayor of the city of Layton, a city of 67,000 in Davis County.

Curtis and his wife listed combined monthly wages of about $4,700.
