SALT LAKE CITY (KSL News Services) -- Police in the Salt Lake Valley are now aware of a new gang in the city.

West Valley City Police Captain Steve Sandquist says their first encounter with the gang was last week. The gang was connected to a drive-by shooting at a convenience store.

Other cities have started to report similar problems. The gang originated out of Central America and California. They're reportedly not afraid of law enforcement. ”They are very aggressive with police,” says Sandquist.

Police say they'll be on-guard and authorities say the gang has heavy recruitment. ”This is the first we’ve had contact with them in West Valley City,” he says.

Federal authorities have branded this gang one of the most violent in the country and used edged weapons like machetes and knives. “We didn’t know they were here,” says Sandquist. “I don’t think we knew how big the problem was.”
