WEST WENDOVER, Nev. (AP) -- State and federal officials have announced plans this weekend to impound about 175 horses near the Nevada-Utah line that are believed to be strays or descendants of horses abandoned by private owners over the years.
Officials for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management say the herd north of West Wendover has grown in size and is causing considerable impacts to BLM-managed public land resources.
State officials will try to establish legal ownership and offer the horses back to the lawful owner. Those without owners will become state property.
The stray horses are separate from and not subject to the federal protections afforded wild roaming horses and burros.
The roundup begins Friday and is expected to last three or four days.
