SYRACUSE -- Administrators refuse to budge on a dress code for a Davis County high school commencement ceremony, even though some students and parents say it's unfair.

Some Polynesian students at Syracuse High School are upset they can't celebrate their culture as they march at graduation Friday night. School policy forbids them from wearing flower leis when they get their diplomas.

The school sent out the graduation dress standards in May, which state students can wear school honor cords over their caps and gowns, but no other ornamentation is allowed.

One student told the Deseret News, wearing a flower lei shows appreciation for how she was raised. But she says she was told if she wears one, she won't be allowed to walk.

The Davis School District says the school is allowed to set its own graduation dress standards.
