SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake County prosecutors have cleared two police officers in the May 1 fatal shooting of a man.
The district attorney's office says officers Bradley Shupe and Kory Olsen had to shoot 20-year-old Favian Martinez to save their lives.
The officers responded to an East South Temple apartment complex after a witness told dispatchers that Martinez had pointed a gun at him.
The officers repeatedly told Martinez to put his hands in the air. But prosecutors say Martinez raised his gun and pointed it at one of the officers.
Shupe and Olsen fired a total of five shots, including two that were deemed fatal.
Martinez's mother earlier said her son may have fled in an effort to avoid jail time because there was an outstanding warrant for him.
