PROVO -- A Provo man is suspected of trying to hire his friend to beat his pregnant girlfriend to cause a miscarriage.

Provo police Sgt. Mark Crosby says 19-year-old Mario Castro allegedly offered his friend $200 a few months ago to beat the 18-year-old woman.

Crosby says the friend said he refused.

The girlfriend told police last week that she learned about the plan after a friend warned her about being outside on the street.

Investigators also say Castro asked a witness to lie to police about the plan.

Castro was jailed on suspicion of solicitation to commit aggravated murder and witness tampering.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
