SOUTH SALT LAKE -- A quick-thinking witness helped police catch a group of potential car thieves.

South Salt Lake police say a witness saw four people breaking into a pickup truck parked at the Century Theater, near 3300 South and State Street, Monday night.

"Our witness was at the Wendy's [restaurant]just to the back of the theater and actually saw the individuals breaking into the truck," said South Salt Lake police Officer Gary Keller.

Police say the three men and one woman caused $10,000 in damage when they ripped the truck's dashboard apart to remove electronics. They were in the process of stealing the truck when officers arrived.

Police say once the suspects were in custody, one of the them made a flippant comment.

"He said, 'I'll be out in a couple hours. I'll be doing it again, but next time you won't catch me,'" Keller said.

It may have not been the smartest thing to say. Keller says officers will pay more attention to him than they would have before.

Police believe the suspects may be responsible for similar crimes in the area.
