SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The University of Utah has given its annual Rosenblatt Prize for Excellence to a computer science professor who runs the school's Scientific Computing and Imaging Center.

The $40,000 gift goes to a faculty member in recognition of teaching, research and administrative efforts.

This year's winner is Christopher R. Johnson, who was honored during commencement ceremonies Friday. One colleague credits Johnson with putting the University of Utah back on the map in the world of computer graphics.

A committee of faculty members recommends candidates and the university's president makes the final selection.

The prize comes from the Rosenblatt endowment, established in 1983 by the Joseph and Evelyn Rosenblatt family.
