SALT LAKE CITY -- Mail carriers in Utah and across the nation used their muscles Saturday to pick up more than just letters.
During their usual mail routes, they also collected thousands of pounds of food.
It was all for the annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive -- a national effort aimed at helping struggling families put food on the table.
"Cause it helps everybody who doesn't have food, I mean the hungry, especially in this economy. It really helps," said volunteer Jake.
Last year, Utah's letter carriers collected a million pounds of food. Nationwide, it was more than 73 million pounds.
The Utah Food Bank reports more than 245,000 Utahns -- 42 percent of whom are children -- receive food assistance each year.
