PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Utah County health officials have collected nearly 900 pounds of unused prescription drugs in recent weeks.

Several collection events have been held as part of a statewide effort called "Clean Out Your Medicine Cabinet."

State and local officials are worried about expired medications either being abused or flushed down toilets. The collection events are intended as a way for Utahns to safely drop off their medications.

Utah County officials say more than 200 individuals and families dropped off medications in recent weeks.

Health officials also gave out more than 1,600 pamphlets about prescription drug abuse and the importance of proper disposal for medications.
