WEST VALLEY CITY -- Fire damaged an apartment building in West Valley City Tuesday morning.

It happened just after 8 a.m. at a complex at 3776 W. Rockwood Way.

A woman picking up children from a nearby apartment noticed smoke coming from the window of a third-story unit and called 911.

At about the same time, neighbors in the apartment complex started seeing and smelling the smoke coming into their own apartments.

Neighbor Christopher Hovey said, "I was asleep and started smelling smoke, so I got up to investigate my own apartment."

"We smelled the fire, and so I yelled out, ‘Fire!' trying to get everyone to hear me," said Casey Colledge, another resident of the complex.

Firefighters arrived, temporarily evacuated residents of the complex, and put out the fire.

"We have two units that had light smoke. We have ventilated those," said Assistant Chief Kris Romijn with the West Valley City Fire Department. "Then we have the apartment that had the fire, and then extension in the roof, so we have extensive damage in the roof joists."

Overall, investigators say the fire caused between $20,000 and $30,000 in damage.

Neighbors said two women live in the unit that caught fire, but they were not home at the time. Officials are still trying to get hold of those tenants, who will most likely be displaced by this fire.

Right now investigators don't know what caused this fire. The say they believe it may have started inside one of the walls.
