SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The Salt Lake County Council has endorsed a plan to ban rifle and muzzleloader hunts in much of Emigration Canyon near Salt Lake City.
The canyon is increasingly populated and officials say the hunts could put neighborhoods at risk.
Under the plan approved Tuesday, archers still would be allowed but firearm hunts for deer, elk and moose would be permitted only on the township's eastern fringe.
The proposal will be discussed during Regional Wildlife Advisory Council meetings on Tuesday in Brigham City and Springville.
Emigration Canyon Community Council member Joan Gallegos raised the issue last year after becoming concerned about state rules that allow hunting within 600 feet of homes.
After the public comments, the Wildlife Board will hear a presentation May 6. If the board approves the proposal it will be in place for the fall hunt.
