SALT LAKE CITY -- Some Westminster College students gathered on campus Friday to protest a new parking lot.
The environmental studies students want the area to be turned into an open green space instead.
Administrators say they have to build the parking lot to stay in accordance with city ordinances.
Executive Director of Communications at Westminster College Laura Murphy said, "There are two real reasons: The fire codes that require we have a hard, flat surface in case of emergency and the building permits that require we maintain and return this space to parking."
The construction of a new Gold LEED-certified science building is requiring the construction of the new parking lot.
