SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah Gov. Gary Herbert has vetoed a bill that would have automatically enrolled customers for a program that would restrict air conditioner use during peak energy hours.
Herbert says he supports energy efficiency, but opposes the mandated enrollment in Rocky Mountain Power's "Cool Keeper" program. Customers could have still opted out under the bill, but they would have had to contact the utility to do so.
The utility says air conditioners for enrolled customers can be turned on an off during 15 minute periods to help reduce the power load.
Herbert vetoed the bill Tuesday.
