SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A coin toss decided who will lead Democrats in the Utah Senate for the next two years.
With eight Democrats in the Senate, two rounds of voting for party leadership were split four-to-four.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported on its Web site Tuesday that rather than go for a third round, Democrats decided to settle the matter with the flip of a coin.
Newly elected Senate Minority Leader Pat Jones of Holladay says the coin toss was a fair way to break the tie.
Sen. Gene Davis of Salt Lake City had hoped to serve as minority leader. He says he would have preferred for there to have been one more round of voting before going to a coin toss.
Assistant Minority Whip Karen Mayne of West Valley also was chosen by coin toss.
