(KSL News) Five same-sex couples knew they'd be turned away, but they still tried to get marriage licenses in Utah in a demonstration for National Freedom to Marry Day.

The couples applied for and were denied marriage licenses at the Salt Lake County Clerk's Office this afternoon. The couples said even though they knew they wouldn't receive the license, they want to send a message.

Jacob Whipple said, "This is actually to our federal legislators, it's to Barack Obama, asking that the defensive marriage act be repealed, asking that we get a slew of amendments that protect us from being fired, that allow us to have these rights that every other couple has."

Same-sex couples lined up at marriage bureaus all across the country today, trying to draw attention to this issue.

A constitutional amendment approved in 2004 prohibits gay marriages in Utah.

Gov. Jon Huntsman recently expressed support for civil unions, but he says he's doesn't want the Legislature to change the Utah Constitution.

County Clerk Sherrie Swensen says that only one other gay couple has applied for a marriage license in the last 18 years, and that was a publicity stunt.
