SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A legislative committee has approved a bill that would reward motorcycle riders for wearing helmets.
Under the bill sponsored by Rep. Ronda Rudd Menlove, R-Garland, motorcyclists cited for traffic violations would have $10 knocked off the fine if they were wearing a helmet.
Menlove says the proposal provides an incentive for people to wear a helmet.
The House Transportation Committee also tabled a bill that would have required riders under age 21 to wear helmets with chin bars and eye protection. Currently, anyone under age 18 has to wear a helmet while riding.
House Bill 158, sponsored by Rep. Neil Hansen, D-Ogden, also would require passengers under 21 and drivers of any age carrying passengers under 21 to wear helmets.
