SALT LAKE CITY -- Prominent Utahn Ted Wilson has accepted Gov. Gary Herbert's invitation to join the governor's staff as a senior adviser on environmental matters.

Wilson's duties will include heading the newly-created Governor's Balanced Resource Council, which will prioritize and recommend action on a number of environmental issues.

"These are issues that require bold leadership, which we have seen from Governor Herbert today with the creation of this council," Wilson said in a news release Wednesday. "I am honored to be selected to head this effort, which I consider a perfect capstone to my career. We will seek input from the public and advocates on all sides, and I am confident we will produce positive outcomes for our state."

Wilson is a former Salt Lake City Mayor and was the Democratic candidate for governor in 1988. Most recently, he served as executive director of the Utah Rivers Council.
