SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A group of activists has chosen a Utah professor as a candidate to try to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Jim Matheson.
The group on Saturday chose 54-year-old University of Utah pathology professor John Weis as the Citizens' Candidate.
Weis' goal is to get enough Democratic delegates to choose him instead of Matheson at the party's May convention.
Weis says he thinks Matheson is vulnerable on several levels and doesn't represent even middle-of-the-road Democrats. He says Matheson has turned his back on Democrats.
Matheson is co-chair of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of fiscally conservative Democrats in the U.S. House. His spokeswoman, Alyson Heyrend, says Matheson is proud of his record and is happy to put it before Utah voters.
