SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Utah Senate panel has defeated a bill that would regulate what can be sold in school vending machines.
The Salt Lake Tribune reported on its Web site Tuesday that a Senate committee voted 2-4 against a new version of Senate Bill 49.The bill would have required companies contracting with schools to supply them only with vending machine drinks and snacks meeting certain nutritional guidelines.
Some members on the committee who voted against the bill said they didn't want to mandate what children eat.
Senate Majority Leader Scott Jenkins, a Republican from Plain City, said he felt like the bill would take responsibilities away from parents.
Bill sponsor Sen. Pat Jones, a Salt Lake City Democrat, says she's not sure whether she'll bring the bill up again this session.
