SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Dirt bikers would be allowed to attach flags to their helmets in Utah instead of on poles on their bikes under a bill the Legislature approved Thursday.

The flags are required when riding on certain sand dunes in the state to help with visibility.

Democratic West Valley City Sen. Brent Goodfellow says long poles sometimes hit people in a crowd and aren't always visible to other riders because they bend down when they're in motion.

Initially, Senate Bill 19 was defeated in the Senate. But the bill passed in the House 66-5. It now heads to Gov. Gary Herbert.
