SALT LAKE CITY -- A few hundred Latino high school students from across the state won praise and cheers Friday as they performed and learned at a statewide conference.
As part of the Latinos in Action, the students volunteer at elementary schools near their high schools to tutor younger students in reading.
The statewide conference offered them a chance to learn more about the importance of service and perform cultural dancing onstage to the cheers of their friends.
At the conference, students were challenged to come up with a plan to get their parents involved in schools.
Students at Mountain Crest High in Hyrum won a $1,000 grant to start a Latino PTA for their parents.
Mountain Crest student Marina Hernandez said students from her school were thrilled to win.
"It means we are able to have our parents involved, which helps us as students," Hernandez said.
