Luka Doncic heads to the Lakers and Anthony Davis goes to the Mavs in blockbuster trade

Luka Doncic has been traded by the reigning Western Conference champion Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis. The deal was announced Sunday after trade talks that took place over about a month and were kept extremely tight-lipped. Doncic, Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris are headed to the Lakers, while Davis and Max Christie are going to Dallas. The Utah Jazz also are involved in the deal. The trade may come at a serious price for Doncic, who now can't sign a five-year supermax extension this summer that could have been worth around $345 million.

David Benavidez dominates David Morell with unanimous decision win to unify light heavyweight title

David Benavidez unified the light heavyweight championship by earning a unanimous decision over challenger David Morrell  to keep his interim WBC belt and win the WBA title. Judges Patricia Morse Jarman and Steve Weisfeld both scored the Saturday night fight 115-111 while Tim Cheatham scored it 118-108. Cheatham's scorecard was much more indicative of what took place in the ring, as the 30-0 Benavidez dominated nearly every round, outside the third and 11th rounds. The Blue Devils ran off 16 straight points in the first half to build a big lead on the way to an 87-70 win on Saturday night. Duke led 40-13 before halftime and by 32 points after halftime. Freshmen Cooper Flagg and Kon Knueppel starred in their first taste of the Duke-UNC rivalry to stay unbeaten in the Atlantic Coast Conference. As for the Tar Heels, they have lost four of five to put their NCAA Tournament hopes in question.

Jordan Poole scored 19 points, Bilal Coulibaly had 14 and Jonas Valanciunas added 13 points and 10 rebounds to help Washington win for the seventh time this season. Washington, which led by seven with under four minutes to play, turned the ball over with 11 seconds left clinging to a two-point lead. But a 3-point try by Minnesota's Nickeil Alexander-Walker rimmed out with three seconds left. Corey Kispert grabbed the rebound and the Wizards ended a 21-game road slide. Jaden McDaniels led Minnesota with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

McCasland was assessed two technical fouls for arguing a flagrant 2 call on JT Toppin after Toppin appeared to kick Houston's Joseph Tugler in the midsection on a jump pass. McCasland argued that Toppin's move was unintentional. Texas Tech AD Kirby Hocutt posted a statement on X, formerly Twitter, saying he was "appalled and disappointed" by the call on Toppin and will bring it up with the Big 12's commissioner.

Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals is chasing the NHL career goals record of 894 held by Wayne Gretzky. Ovechkin entered the season 42 goals short of breaking a record that long seemed unapproachable. He missed 16 games with a broken leg but resumed his pursuit in December.

Knicks' Anunoby leaves game against Lakers with sprained right foot

Knicks forward OG Anunoby left the game against the Lakers on Saturday night after falling to the court with a sprained right foot. Anunoby caught the ball near the left sideline while defended by LeBron James in the third quarter and appeared he might take a jump shot. Instead, he went to one knee, holding his lower right leg, and James backed off. Anunoby eventually got up and walked directly to the locker room area. He was leading the Knicks with 13 points while also being the primary defender on James. Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said X-rays were negative.

Ohtani's return to pitching could come in May for World Series champion Dodgers

Shohei Ohtani pitching for the Los Angeles Dodgers in May sounds "about right." That's according to manager Dave Roberts, who spoke Saturday at the team's annual fan fest. Roberts made it clear Ohtani won't pitch in the season-opening Japan Series against the Chicago Cubs on March 18-19. The two-way superstar hasn't pitched in the majors since August 2023, when he was with the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander had surgery on his left shoulder in November. Ohtani says his rehab is on schedule, but he won't know his status until he throws his first bullpen session.

DeAngelo's overtime goal lifts Islanders to 3-2 win over Lightning

Tony DeAngelo converted on a breakaway 33 seconds into overtime to lift the New York Islanders to their seventh straight win, 3-2 over the Tampa Bay Lightning. Kyle Palmieri and Adam Boqvist, in his Islanders' debut, also scored for New York while Ilya Sorokin finished with 28 saves. Captain Cook won the $250,000 Withers by 2 1/4 lengths at Aqueduct to join the Kentucky Derby trail. Ridden by Manny Franco, Captain Cook ran nine furlongs in 1:51.83. The colt trained by Rick Dutrow earned 20 Derby qualifying points for the May 3 race at Churchill Downs. Surfside Moon, a 33-1 shot, was second and Omaha Omaha was third. Dutrow says Captain Cook potentially will be pointed toward the Wood Memorial on April 5.

Calipari gets lukewarm response in return to Kentucky as Arkansas coach

John Calipari received a mixed reception at Rupp Arena on Saturday night prior to his Arkansas Razorbacks playing No. 12 Kentucky. Calipari, in his first season at Arkansas, served as coach of the Wildcats for 15 seasons and compiled a 410-123 mark. He led Kentucky to its eighth national championship in 2012 before resigning last April to take a similar post at Arkansas. He signed a five-year contract that included a base salary of $7 million, plus incentives. There were definitely more boos, but some applause and cheers as well in Calipari's first time back in Lexington. The Hall of Fame coach is the winningest active coach in men's college basketball and has an 867-271 mark during his stops at Massachusetts, Memphis, Kentucky and now Arkansas.

Allen, who they were acquiring from the Phoenix Mercury as part of the Alyssa Thomas trade, will go to Chicago for Lindsay Allen and the rights to Nikolina Milic. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the two deals haven't been announced. Saturday was the first day that teams could officially sign free agents and make trades.

The Baltimore Banner reports that three additional massage therapists have accused Baltimore Ravens kicker Justin Tucker of sexually inappropriate conduct. The paper says nine massage therapists from five spas and wellness centers have now shared accounts with the Banner. In its initial report Thursday on this matter, the Banner said it spoke to six massage therapists who recounted firsthand experiences with Tucker from 2012 to 2016. Several therapists said they ended Tucker's sessions early or refused to work on him again, and managers from two spas said they banned him from returning. Tucker said Thursday he has never received any complaints from a massage therapist or been told he was not welcome at a spa or other place of business.
