Zach Hyman had his third hat trick of the season and fourth in the NHL to help the Edmonton Oilers win their seventh straight game, 3-1 over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday night. Stuart Skinner made 29 saves to help the Oilers improve to 20-15-1 and move into eighth place in the Western Conference. They have overcome a 5-12-1 start by going 15-3-0 in their last 18. Hyman completed the hat trick on a power play with 2:50 to go off a feed from Connor McDavid. Hyman has 25 goals this season. Kris Knoblauch became the first coach in NHL history to have two seven-game winning streaks in his first 25 games in the position. Evan Bouchard assisted on all three goals.

The game was supposed to be the second matchup of the three Hughes brothers in an NHL game but it never happened as Devils All-Star center Jack Hughes was sidelined by an upper-body injury sustained on Friday night. That left Luke Hughes of the Devils and Quinn Hughes to face off and the Canucks dominated with New Jersey coming off a very physical game at home on Friday night.

Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen stopped 40 shots for Buffalo as he continues to bounce back from a rough December. Pittsburgh had tied the game earlier in the third period on Rickard Rakell's goal. Alex Tuch gave the Sabres an early lead with his 10th goal of the season and the team earned its third victory in four games. Jarry made 29 saves for the Penguins.

Washington's 16-0 first half run put the Huskies in front and they held on throughout the second half, despite a late challenge led by Jordan Pope of the Beavers. After Wilhelm Breidenbach made two free throws for the Huskies, Pope hit a stepback 3-pointer, Brooks scored at the rim and Pope hit another stepback 3 to get Oregon State within 75-71 with 35 seconds remaining. The Huskies, who had a 19-point advantage at the free-throw line, then went 4-for-4 at the line to close out the win.

Chris Kirk takes a one-shot lead into the final round of The Sentry in the PGA Tour season opener. And he has plenty of company. Kirk escaped a tee shot into the weeds for a par on the 15th and birdied the final hole for a 66. He leads by one over 21-year-old Akshay Bhatia. Two shots behind were Xander Schauffele and Jordan Spieth Both have won at Kapalua before and know to expect anything in the final round. There were 12 players within four shots of the lead. The Plantation course is renowned for wild finishes of low scoring.

Arthur Kaluma added 14 points for Kansas State (11-3, 1-0), which has won eight of its last nine games. Cam Carter chipped in 12 points and blocked three shots. Will McNair Jr. scored 11 points. Darius Johnson scored 10 points for UCF (9-4, 0-1), Perry hit a pair of 3-pointers during a 13-0 run in the second half that stretched the Wildcats' lead to 60-25 with 12 minutes left. It was their largest of the game.

Duke earned its sixth consecutive victory. Jeremy Roach went 9 for 9 at the free-throw line and scored 18 points for the Blue Devils. Jared McCain finished with 11 points. Freshman Praise Egharevba came off the bench to score 14 points and Oklahoma State defeated No. 23 TCU 67-59 as the Horned Frogs have to learn to play without leading scorer Sedona Prince. Prince was averaging 21.2 points but she suffered a hand injury in a loss to No. 6 Baylor on Wednesday. TCU, whose last lead was 4-3, was within 50-48 on a 3-point play by DaiJa Turner early in the fourth quarter. But that was the last field goal the Horned Frogs made, finishing 1 for 14, including 0 for 10 from 3-point range. They did make 12 of 13 free throw. Stailee Heard had six points in a 7-0 run for the Cowgirls that stretched the lead back to 62-51 with 3:17 to play. Madison Connor had 20 points and Jaden Owens 19 for the Horned Frogs

But as these Huskies prepare to compete for the championship again Monday night against Michigan, there's one player who shares the ultimate bond with someone from that team. Senior linebacker Carson Bruener's father, Mark Bruener, was a freshman tight end on the 1991 team that went 12-0 to win the national championship.

To take advantage of what was still a three-point lead, Griffen fouled Tyrin Lawrence, who made his first free throw and missed the second. That extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA because of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season is paying off for the teams playing in the College Football Playoff championship game Monday night. Among Washington's 22 offensive and defensive starters, seven are in their sixth seasons and seven are in their fifth. Michigan has one starter in his sixth season and eight in their fifth. Michigan co-defensive coordinator Jesse Minter says all that experience was a factor in both teams making it to Houston.

Draymond Green has been reinstated by the NBA from his suspension after the Golden State star missed 12 games for hitting Phoenix center Jusuf Nurkic in the face on Dec. 12. The league says Green "demonstrated his commitment to conforming his conduct to standards expected of NBA players" during his suspension, which began Dec. 14. He has met with a counselor as well as had multiple joint meetings with representatives of the league, the Warriors and the National Basketball Players Association. Those meetings, the league added, will continue throughout the season. In a release before the game, TCU said Prince got hurt in the 23rd-ranked Horned Frogs' loss at sixth-ranked Baylor on Wednesday. The school offered no other specific details, saying only that Prince is expected to return before the end of the season. The 6-foot-7 transfer from Oregon played all 40 minutes against Baylor and finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds. The ACL reconstruction procedure was performed by Dr. Frank Petrigliano at Keck Hospital of USC. Copley suffered the knee injury during practice on Dec. 15 and was immediately placed on long-term injured reserve. Copley is 4-1-2 with a 3.16 goals-against average in eight starts. A 3-pointer by Jorge Diaz Graham put Pitt up by 12 points five minutes into the second half. A couple of minutes later, Hinson made three free throws for the second time in the game, giving the Panthers a 55-41 lead. Mike James, who led Louisville with 23 points, then hit three 3-pointers for nine consecutive Louisville points, but the Cardinals only got within 57-50. Pittsburgh scored the next 10 points and the Panthers led by at least 13 points for the remainder of the game.

Iowa starter Patrick McCaffery was ill and missed the game where his dad surpassed former coach Tom Davis for the most Big Ten wins at the school with 127. Mawot Mag scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for Rutgers. Both teams started the second half hot but only the Hawkeyes stayed that way. Sandfort hit a 3-pointer and Owen Freeman converted two three-point plays and then had two free throws for a 66-52 lead with 12:16 to go. Twice Rutgers got the deficit to nine, but Freeman had a dunk and Sandfort drilled a 3-pointer to make it 73-61. Tony Perkins had five points in a 7-0 run, with his dunk pushing the lead to 80-63 with 5:43 to play.

The Chicago Blackhawks have placed rookie center Connor Bedard on injured reserve with a broken jaw. Bedard got hurt when he was leveled by New Jersey defenseman Brendan Smith midway through the first period of Friday night's 4-2 loss to the Devils. Nick Foligno also went on IR with a fractured left finger, adding another name to Chicago's long list of injured forwards. In desperate need of reinforcements, the Blackhawks acquired forward Rem Pitlick from Pittsburgh for a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old Bedard has a team-high 15 goals and 18 assists in 39 games.

Aston Villa could thank Matty Cash's 87th-minute winner at Riverside Stadium for beating Middlesbrough 1-0. Paris Saint-Germain defender Milan Škriniar will have an operation after dislocating his left ankle. It may rule him out of both legs of the Champions League round-of-16 contest against Real Sociedad. PSG says tests revealed damage to the side of the ankle and that he will have the operation next week in Qatar. The Slovakia international could be out for several weeks. He limped off in the 71st minute of Wednesday's Champions Trophy win against Toulouse. PSG faces Sociedad on Feb. 14 and March 5.

Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua's next fight will be against MMA star Francis Ngannou in Saudi Arabia. Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn says it's a "done deal" and that details will be announced at a press conference in London on Jan. 15. Ngannou has only boxed once professionally, when he knocked down Tyson Fury before losing in a split-decision to the reigning WBC heavyweight champion in late October. A date for the Riyadh fight wasn't announced but it looks likely to take place in March.

South Dakota State is seeking to repeat as NCAA champions in the Football Championship Subdivision. The top-seeded undefeated Jackrabbits take a 28-game winning streak into Sunday's title game against No. 2 seed Montana in Frisco, Texas. This is Jimmy Rogers' first year as the Jackrabbits head coach. He was their defensive coordinator for last year's championship, and was a linebacker and captain for their first playoff team in 2009. Montana is playing in its first title game since 2009. The Grizzlies are two-time champions in the second-tier of Division I football. They won titles in 1995 and 2001.

Odermatt dominated in a wire-to-wire win at Adelboden by more than a second. He joins skiing greats Ingemar Stenmark and Hermann Maier by winning in three straight years on the storied Chuenisbärgli course that is a rolling cow pasture in summer. He celebrated with a body-surfing leap onto the finish-area safety barrier. Odermatt padded his huge 1.04-second lead from the first run to finish 1.26 ahead of Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. Filip Zubcic was third.

Canadian skier Valerie Grenier has won her second career World Cup giant slalom. She also triumphed at the same Slovenian resort a year ago. Mikaela Shiffrin finished the rain-marred race in ninth position. The American won the previous GS in Austria nine days ago. Saturday's result was the American's worst in 15 giant slaloms since November 2022 when she was 13th in Killington. Grenier was looming in fourth when she posted the best time in the second run and saw the three fastest racers from the opening leg all fail to beat her. Lara Gut-Behrami came closest to Grenier, the Swiss skier trailing by 0.37 seconds.
