KANAB, Kane County — A truck struck and killed two motorcyclists Thursday after the riders stopped on state Route 89 near Kanab in Kane County, officials said.

A group of eight motorcyclists were traveling east on state Route 89 about 11:15 a.m. when one of the riders remembered he had forgotten a bag at the local McDonald's restaurant where the riders had recently stopped, according to a statement from Utah Highway Patrol officials.

The motorcyclist told the others that he would catch up with them after he went back and picked up his bag. The rider pulled over to wait for traffic to pass and three of the other motorcyclists stopped with him, some still in the travel lane.

The driver of a truck also traveling east did not see the riders stop, and he hit his brakes but could not avoid a collision, Utah Highway Patrol officials said. The truck hit at least two of the motorcyclists who, in turn, hit the two other motorcyclists.

Ingreborg Treitinger, 62, of Los Angeles, California, died on scene, and Brigit Stein, 50, of Germany, died at the Kane County Hospital later that day.

One other rider was transported from the Kane County Hospital to Dixie Regional Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

The group was headed from Los Angeles, California, to Sturgis, South Dakota, Utah Highway Patrol said.
