MAGNA — A man was killed and a woman injured in an officer-involved shooting Tuesday morning, police say.
The man killed has been identified as Lonnie Marcel Bowen, 41, of Salt Lake City, according to a statement from Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.
According to the statement, police received a call about 3 a.m. from a man in the Millcreek area, later identified as Bowen, saying he had a hostage.
"The caller stated, 'Tell your officers to back off, or I will shove this knife through her throat,'" Lohrke's statement said.
Officers pinged Bowen's cellphone and eventually located Bowen in a truck in near 3698 South 900 East in Millcreek.
"Officers did not notice anything out of the ordinary, other than a truck leaving the area," Lohrke wrote. "Officers were able to get the license plate of the truck before it left."
Lohrke said Unified police received information from West Valley police that they were chasing the same truck near 5600 West and 3100 South. After tire spikes were deployed by West Valley officers, the truck came to a stop at 2750 S. 8400 West, Lohrke said.
At some point, a Unified police officer who also responded to the chase fired at least one shot, killing Bowen, Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera told reporters. She did not say how many shots were fired.
A woman in the vehicle, who Rivera described as the victim in the case, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries police say she received from Bowen.

On Sunday, Bowen posted a live Facebook video sharing his disdain for law enforcement. “Salt Lake City PD are killers,” the video starts. “And they are responsible for anything that happens to me, death-wise.”
Bowen speaks for more than four minutes, at times mentioning a gang affiliation. He repeatedly alludes to his impending death.
“They gonna make my death look like a drug deal gone bad,” Bowen says in the video. “I know they gunning for me. I know they waiting for me.”
Salt Lake City police said that in the past month, they’ve had three interactions with Bowen; none of them negative. They said one of them was over mental health issues.
No officers were injured in the shooting Tuesday morning. Police released no information about possible weapons found at the scene.
The Salt Lake City Police Department will lead the investigation into the shooting.
