SANDY — A 30-year-old man shot by federal agents near the Historic Sandy TRAX station Tuesday afternoon has died from his injuries, police say.
Sandy Police Lt. Dean Carriger said federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives tracked the wanted man down to a parking lot near the TRAX station at 165 E. 9000 South.
Carriger said the man was in a vehicle when the agents made contact with him and “based on some actions of the individual” shots were fired by the officers.
The man was “struck by rounds from the officers,” Carriger said, and subsequently transported to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray. At 8:10 p.m., Sandy police officials confirmed via Twitter the man involved in the shooting died.
Police did not identify the man, and details about the ATF's arrest warrant are not known.
Carriger said there were other people in the vehicle with the wanted man, but none of them were injured. The other occupants of the car were being detained for questioning, he said.
The Unified Police Department will be investigating the incident, Sandy police officials said.
