SALT LAKE CITY — Newly released surveillance video shows the moments before a 25-year-old skateboarder was struck by a car before the vehicle sped off on Feb. 4.
The video, captured from a home security system, shows the skateboarder, Austin Bryson, skating down 500 East near Harvard Avenue shortly after 7 a.m. that morning. As he skates down the street, he is followed by what appears to be a white or silver vehicle.
Salt Lake police said that vehicle then struck Bryson before fleeing the scene. That collision, which happens off-screen, is heard in the video. Bryson is heard making calls for help after the collision. A pair of bystanders is then seen running to his aid on foot at the end of the video.
Bryson suffered a “severely broken leg, minor injuries to his spine and a serious scalp laceration,” according to a GoFundMe* account set up by his girlfriend.
While the video doesn’t offer much more information — such as a make or model of the car — officers are hopeful it will help jog someone’s memory about events the morning of the incident as they search for new information in the case, said Salt Lake City police detective Robert Ungricht.
Ungricht added that police have received multiple tips about the incident but none have yielded much progress in the case.
