SALT LAKE CITY — Utah lawmakers passed a so-called "free-range parenting" bill Wednesday that ensures moms and dads don't come under investigation for letting their children play alone.
SB65 revises state law to say it isn't neglect to let children do things such as travel to and from school, go to parks and play outside if they are otherwise well cared for.
Rep. Brad Daw, R-Orem, the House sponsor of the bill, said child protective services has investigated parents for neglect under some of those circumstances in other states, but it has not happened in Utah.
"This bill seeks to ensure it never will," he said.
The House unanimously passed the bill Wednesday. The Senate did the same last month. The measure now goes to the governor for consideration.
