NEPHI — A Mona man died after the dump truck he was driving was struck by a train Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded to a report of a crash on Sheep Lane Road near Main Street just south of Nephi around 1 p.m., according to Juab County Sheriff’s Office in a statement.

Deputies said David Stubbs, 27, was driving the truck that was traveling west on Sheep Lane Drive when his vehicle was struck by a Union Pacific freight train traveling north. Stubbs was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said four people on the train at the time were not injured but were "visibly shaken." The train consisted of three locomotives and three empty cargo cars. Stubbs was a driver for Taurus Plumbing & Excavating located in Nephi.

The railroad crossing in the area does not have crossing arms or warning lights and the sheriff's office said there have been no significant incidents in that location for "many years." Tuesday's crash remains under investigation.

The crash closed westbound travel of Sheep Lane Road at Main Street for most of the afternoon, according to Utah Department of Transportation officials.

Tuesday's crash was also the second involving a Union Pacific train and a vehicle in the state over the past week. Summit County Sheriff's investigated a crash involving a train striking a vehicle near Castle Rock Friday.

In that case, the driver was able to get out of their vehicle before the train collided with it and was not injured, according to Summit County Sheriff's Lt. Andrew Wright.
