SALT LAKE CITY — Several roads across the state are closing for the winter season due to safety concerns and maintenance costs, according to Utah Department of Transportation spokesperson John Gleason.

Here are nine roadway closures (and one ferry) to keep an eye out for. This list is limited to numbered state Routes and does not include any local county or forest roads.

Closed:

Guardsman Pass, aka state Route 190, from Big Cottonwood Canyon to Park City is closed and will reopen at the end of May. Motorists who normally travel this route should use I-80 and U.S. 40/U.S. 189 as alternate routes.

The American Fork/Alpine Loop, aka state Route 92, is closed from milepost 14 in American Fork Canyon to milepost 22.5 near Sundance. The road will reopen late May to early June. Motorists who normally travel this route should use US-189 as an alternate route. The alternate route is 31 minutes faster, according to a UDOT study.

Closing:

Wolf Creek Pass, aka state Route 35, will close from Francis to Hanna Nov. 27 and reopen mid-May. Commuters can use US-40 as an alternate route.

The Big Mountain Highway, aka state route 65, will close between milepost 3, just north of the Emigration Canyon turnoff in eastern Salt Lake County, and milepost 13, about 2 miles south of the East Canyon State Park in Morgan County.

Motorists who normally use this route should use I-84 and state Route 66 from Morgan or state Route 65 from I-84 at Henefer to access the East Canyon recreation area during the winter months. The road will reopen during early to mid-May.

Cedar Mountain, aka state Route 148, will close east of Cedar City from milepost .2 near US-89 Tod’s Junction to milepost 19 near Cedar Breaks National Monument. The road closes in late November and reopens in late May or early June. Motorists who normally travel this route should use US-89 and state Route 143 as alternate routes.

Mt. Holly Junction Road, aka state Route 153, will close in late November and reopen late May or early June. Commuters can use state Route 20/US-89 as alternate routes, which is 9 minutes faster than state Route 153, according to a UDOT study.

Monte Cristo Highway, aka state Route 39 will close east of Ogden to milepost 56 near Woodruff. Commuters can find alternate routes by using I-84, I-80, Utah's state Route 16 and state Route 167 and Wyoming state Route 89.
