WEST VALLEY CITY — A man with a history of leading police on chases in stolen vehicles was arrested early Friday after leading officers on another high-speed chase.
Officers were looking for Jerry Lynn Herzet, 52, of West Valley City, late Thursday. Just before midnight, officers spotted him in a stolen 2017 Infiniti Q50 near 4200 W. Volta Ave. (3900 South), said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.
Because of his history of fleeing, officers positioned themselves in the area to arrest Herzet, including officers with spike strips, in case he tried to drive away again, she said. When officers approached Herzet, Vainuku said he did take off.
"The vehicle was successfully spiked but was equipped with run-flat tires, which allowed the driver to continue to flee," she said.
The chase reached speeds of 105 mph at one point, and officers unsuccessfully attempted several PIT maneuvers, said West Valley Police Lt. Mike Fossmo.
The chase proceeded on Bangerter Highway and then east on state Route 201. The fleeing vehicle continued onto I-15 and then 3300 South before officers were able to bring the chase to an end with a successful PIT manuever at 2343 E. and 3300 South.
Herzet was taken into custody at that point without further incident, Vainuku said.
Herzet has an extensive criminal history, according to court records. Most recently, a warrant was issued for his arrest Oct. 18 for an incident a week earlier. In that case, Herzet was arrested after allegedly being spotted in a truck stolen from a car dealership, running from police and then taking "two swings" at the arresting officer in the process.
Likewise, in July, Herzet was charged with stealing a car during a test drive from another dealership and then fleeing from police when they attempted to arrest him. He was also charged with failing to stop at the command of a law enforcer in December, and was convicted of a similar charge in 2011.
