MOUNT PLEASANT — A 10-year-old boy has been wounded by a gunshot in Mount Pleasant, according to the Sanpete County Sheriff's Office.
The boy was in stable condition Wednesday before being transported to Sanpete Valley Hospital, Mount Pleasant Police Chief Jim Wilberg said. The child later was airlifted to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City.
Wilberg said an officer responded to a residence at about 2:40 p.m. Wednesday and found the 10-year-old victim, as well as an 11-year-old who is related to the victim, in the house.
It appeared that the 10-year-old had a gunshot wound from a 40-caliber handgun to the left side of his head, Wilberg said.
He said one child may have known the combination to a gun safe in which the handgun was locked. The gun may have gone off as it was being taken out of the safe, Wilberg said, but police are still investigating to determine exactly what happened.
No information was available about the identity of either child. Wilberg said he expected the 10-year-old to recover from the gunshot wound.
Mount Pleasant police, along with other local departments, were investigating the incident, Wilberg said.
