MOAB — A pilot and a Moab city councilwoman were injured in a plane crash Thursday night outside of Moab.
Rani Derasary, 47, of Moab, and pilot Nate Rydman, 46, of Moab, were injured when their plane crashed about 8:20 p.m. less than 2 miles from the Canyonlands Field Airport. Their injuries are serious but not considered to be life-threatening, according to a statement from the Grand County Sheriff's Office.
The aircraft crashed into an area of sand hills and sagebrush and is considered a total loss.
The plane had taken off from the airport about 35 minutes earlier. The sheriff's office reported there "were sudden shifts in wind speed and wind direction," which are believed to be contributing factors in the accident.
