SALT LAKE CITY — Police on Thursday identified a 49-year-old man who died after a vehicle he was working on fell on him Wednesday night.

Salt Lake police said Mario Perez was working on the vehicle with a friend at a parking lot near 1800 West and Kimberly Circle. The friend left for about 20 minutes and returned to find the man pinned underneath the vehicle.

The friend and neighbors were able to remove Perez from underneath the vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.

“It seems like he was working on the car; we could see that there’s tools around the vehicle, and maybe the jack failed and the car fell on top of him,” Salt Lake City Police Lt. Robin Heiden said Wednesday.

Police said it appeared to be a “tragic accident.” What exactly caused the vehicle to fall on the man remains under investigation.
