HYDE PARK, Cache County — Poor road conditions likely factored in a five-car crash that left an elderly Idaho couple dead in Hyde Park Thursday morning, police said.
North Park police said Robert Haworth, 85, died at the scene and Henriette Haworth, 78, was transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. Police said the couple were from Franklin, Idaho.
Emergency crews responded to a report of the crash near 3120 N. Highway 91 at about 7:07 a.m., according to authorities.
Police said the incident started when a 1999 Toyota Camry traveling in the southbound lane attempted to pass another vehicle and lost control on the wet and slushy road, colliding with a Logan City garbage truck traveling in the northbound lane.
A 2005 Toyota Avalon traveling south behind the Camry struck the truck while attempting to avoid the crash.
Robert Haworth, driving a 1998 Cadillac DeVille, attempted to avoid the crash and stopped across the southbound lanes facing east and west. At that time, a 2016 Toyota Tacoma collided with the Deville at the driver’s side door. The Tacoma was then struck by the garbage truck, which then collided with a power transformer, police said.
No other injuries were reported. Police said the crash remains under investigation but officials added the road was wet and slushy at the time of the crash.
