SPRINGVILLE — Thursday marked a difficult day for a Utah County family: three years since their husband, father and grandfather was killed in a car crash caused by a driver who was under the influence of prescription drugs

On Dec. 15, 2013, Randy Rummage was returning home from church when his Honda Accord was broadsided by a Jeep Liberty at the intersection of 1400 North and Main Street in Springville. Rummage was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center where he died from his injuries.

A police investigation found the driver of the Jeep ran the red light.

On the third anniversary of his death, Rummage's family came to the accident site to honor his memory with a wreath. They hope it reminds everyone of the dangers of driving under the influence.

"It's sad. It's hard to find joy sometimes this time of year," said Tena Rummage, Randy Rummage's widow. "But we feel like placing this wreath here at the intersection where my husband was killed is a reminder to us all ... to drive responsibly."

Rummage's daughter said she hopes the visual reminder will save other families from a similar loss.

"There's way too many families like ours that have to share in the heartache of losing someone because of another person's irresponsible way of driving," Brooke Simpson said.

The Rummage family has shared their tragic experience in a public service announcement in an ongoing effort to raise awareness with others.

Bryan Long, the other driver involved in the accident, is currently serving a sentence of up to five years in prison. He had his first parole hearing a few days ago and the Rummage family expects a decision in a couple of weeks.
