HOLLADAY — A 24-year-old man was arrested after police say he tried to strangle his father, leaving him in critical condition.

Shortly after 5:30 a.m. Saturday, Unified police responded to a medical call near 4000 Solar Circle that had been reported to police as an attempted suicide. Statements made to a police dispatcher indicated the caller may have be involved in the incident, according to the Unified Police Lt. Brian Lohrke.

Upon arriving at the house, police discovered a 53-year-old man who was unconscious, had a noose tied around his neck and he was breathing shallowly. He was transported to the hospital.

Shane Wright, the man's son, reportedly told police "It's gruesome. I helped my dad kill himself," according to a probable cause statement.

After advising Wright of his rights, he told police "he needed to aid with his dad's death in order to help his dad through all his pain," the statement said.

Wright was taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted murder.

His father, Bryan Wright, remains in critical condition, Lohrke said Saturday evening.
