So, you've just found out you’re pregnant. Congratulations! There’s a lot to do and think about before your little bundle of joy comes, but if this is your first time having a baby, you likely have a myriad of questions.

Aside from the obvious pregnancy symptoms of morning sickness and cravings, there’s a lot people don’t always mention to first-time moms. Here are five less-common (but hard to ignore) pregnancy symptoms:

1. Snoring

Yes, it’s true. Pregnancy plays havoc with your hormone levels, which in reality can change just about everything about you. These hormone changes and increased blood flow throughout your body cause your mucous membranes to swell and increase in production, which causes a runny/stuffy nose and congestion. It’s the congestion that will cause you to sleep with your mouth open and produce ox-sized snores each night. It might be a good idea to invest in some earplugs for the hubby, and saline nose drops before bed can also help. If you invest in a body pillow, this will also help you to sleep on your side, which can minimize the snoring.

2. Hot flashes and sweating

Symptoms depend on the woman and the specific pregnancy, but most women experience a certain level of warmness throughout their pregnancy. This is because you actually are warmer while pregnant. When women ovulate, their basal body temperature goes up between a half and a whole degree, which lasts until you start your period. But if you’re pregnant, you’re running hot for the next nine months.

Hot flashes and sweating occur because your metabolism is working extra hard. Increased blood flow also makes your skin warmer, so dress in light layers and wear plenty of antiperspirant.

  1. Gas

Increased progesterone during pregnancy causes sluggish intestines, which makes you often have the urge to pass gas. This sluggishness of the digestive system can also cause another problem: constipation. Although there’s no real way to avoid the gas, you can minimize constipation by drinking plenty of water, consuming fiber and walking daily. It might not be a bad idea to use some stool softener, either.

4. Skin issues

From acne and stretch marks to spider veins, there’s plenty that pregnancy does to mess up your skin. Increased melanin production can cause dark blotches on your face. But these few annoyances are small potatoes when compared with weird pregnancy rashes. Cholestasis of pregnancy is a dangerous condition that causes itchy hands and feet, so contact your doctor if you notice those symptoms. Although pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy is a harmless benign skin rash, it can be horribly irritating. Remember to hydrate your skin often and take oatmeal baths to calm dry and stretched skin.

5. Swelling

Many women retain fluid during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester. Although swollen feet aren’t uncommon, some women might also experience swollen legs, arms and hands. It’s important to be comfortable throughout your pregnancy, so make sure to wear loose clothing, roomy shoes and flexible or loose-fitting jewelry. Rings often get stuck on women's swollen fingers and sometimes require emergency removal. A company called Enso Rings has invented flexible and hypoallergenic jewelry that’s perfect for pregnancy. Check out their new silicone rings today.
