SANDY — A Sandy motel was evacuated Wednesday and law enforcement officers had to be decontaminated after police arrested a probationer and found fentanyl in the room he was staying in.
Police arrested Nathan Jetter after they received a tip that he had left his residence and was staying at a motel near 9000 S. State Street, Utah corrections officials reported.
Another individual was also in the the room, but was released after being questioned by police.
When parole officers found a gun in the room, they called Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearm agents to the scene, corrections officials said. The agents then found a powdered substance believed to be fentanyl and called Drug Enforcement Administration agents to respond.
In powdered form, fentanyl can be deadly when inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
The motel was evacuated as agents began decontaminating the property.
Both Jetter and the individual that was with him were taken to a local hospital for observation. Five agents underwent decontamination, corrections officials reported.
Jetter was booked into the Salt Lake County Adult Detention Center. The DEA officials will be handling charges.
