MILLCREEK — A West Jordan man accused of shooting and killing a police K-9 last week in Millcreek died Monday from injuries he suffered during the ensuing shootout with police.

However, investigators haven't ruled out the possibility that the fatal gunshot wound was self-inflicted, according to Unified police.

David Shane Anderson, 36, died around 3 p.m. at a local hospital, Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell said.

Anderson was shot by officers inside a home at 4303 S. 730 East late at night on April 27 after he opened fire on K-9 officer Aldo, Bell has said. Aldo, a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois and five-year veteran of the Unified Police Department, died from his injuries.

The officers took cover outside the home and a SWAT team was called to the scene, resulting in a four-hour standoff. Police eventually threw tear gas into the home and entered after Anderson didn't come out, according to Bell. Anderson was found inside a bedroom in critical condition and was taken to a hospital, the lieutenant said last week.

It was not known Monday how many shots Anderson allegedly fired or how many times police shot back. He died from "injuries he sustained during the shooting incident," Bell said Monday, but an autopsy into the cause of death was still pending.

Anderson suffered a gunshot wound to the head, Bell said, but "whether it’s self-inflicted or not … is what (investigators) are waiting to see."

Three Unified police officers were placed on administrative leave, following department protocol, as a result of the shooting, he said.

Anderson allegedly shot Aldo after the K-9 alerted officers that someone was hiding in the home, Bell has said. One of the officers shielded Aldo from additional gunfire and took him from the room during the ordeal, he said. None of the other officers were hurt.

Four other people ran out of the home after shots rang out. Bell said the four people were in a different area of the house than Anderson. All four were interviewed by police that night and one of them — 22-year-old Amanda Sims — was arrested on unrelated outstanding warrants, the lieutenant said.

Bell said Sims and the others were not being held in the house against their will and were not conspiring with Anderson to help him avoid arrest.

The West Valley City Police Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting.

Anderson's criminal history in Utah was extensive and consisted of several arrests for drug distribution and possession, court records show. He was charged in November with drug distribution and was a fugitive in that case, police said. He allegedly rammed a police vehicle earlier in April while fleeing from officers.
