SMITHFIELD, Cache County — A man invited his father to his house Thursday and then stabbed the Logan man multiple times in the neck, killing him, police said.

Shane Alan Hallstrom, 25, of Smithfield, was arrested for investigation of murder. He is accused of fatally stabbing his father, Calvin Leon Hallstrom, 58, in the driveway of the house the son shares with his mother.

Smithfield police were called to the home, 380 E. 160 South, just after 5:30 p.m. Thursday. They arrived to find Calvin Hallstrom lying at the edge of the driveway "bleeding heavily from the neck," said Smithfield Police Chief Travis Allen.

The victim's son "was kneeling just a few feet from where Calvin's body was lying" with a "blank stare" on his face, the chief said.

Calvin Hallstrom died a short time later at a local hospital.

Allen said the victim had been divorced from Shane Hallstrom's mother for some time. Investigators believe the son invited his father over on Thursday.

"We believe that Shane and Calvin were planning to make arrangements to meet at the address to spend the evening together," Allen said.

Shortly after the elder Hallstrom arrived, Shane Hallstrom produced a kitchen knife and stabbed him multiple times, according to the chief.

"At this point, a motive to the attack has not been established," he said.

Whether the father and son had previously been on good terms or if inviting the father to he house was out of the ordinary was unknown Friday. Allen said Shane Hallstrom has been unwilling to speak to investigators.

Shane Hallstrom has no prior criminal history in Utah, according to court records. His mother filed for divorce in 1994.

Lezlie Clegg, who lives on the same street as Shane Hallstrom and his mother, said she had never noticed any problems at the home. Clegg said the woman has lived there since at least the 1980s.

"She's a sweet lady and it's a tragedy that she has to go through this," Clegg said. "It’s such a safe community. We don’t ever see anything like this ever happen here, so it’s hard. It’s a very peaceful neighborhood."

Neighbors said Thursday night's death is the second tragedy to affect the same family in the past several months. They said Shane Hallstrom is the brother of Ashley Hallstrom, a transgender woman whose suicide in Cache County last fall attracted national attention.
