OGDEN — A woman was taken to McKay-Dee Hospital via Life Flight helicopter after a reported 50-foot fall Sunday in Waterfall Canyon near Ogden, police said.
The woman has been identified as 19-year-old Sophie Hillmeyer of Duluth, Minnesota. Officials say Hillmeyer is in surgery at McKay-Dee Hospital and her condition is critical.
Police received a call around 12:00 p.m. Sunday, according to Lt. Brandon Toll of Weber County Sheriff's Office. Upon arrival at Waterfall Canyon, which contains a popular hiking trail, officers found a 19-year-old woman who had fallen about 50 feet near the waterfalls in the area, Toll said. She was stuck about two miles into a heavily wooded area, causing delays in responders' ability to reach her.
Upon making contact with Hillmeyer, officers discovered she had a bad laceration and a possible skull fracture, as well as a possible broken arm, Toll said. She was transported to a nearby hospital via a life flight helicopter.
The cause of the Hillmeyer's fall remains undetermined, though it appears as though she and other hikers were climbing on the rocks nearby, according to Toll. More information will be released as it becomes available.
