BIG COTTONWOOD CANYON — A weekend storm brought some fresh powder to the mountains and people in the mood for winter sports flocked to the resorts.
The parking lots at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon and at Snowbird were both full, and the tram to Snowbird was jam-packed Sunday as skiers and snowboarders made their way to the fresh powder.
"I get just as excited as everybody else,” said Snowbird Bird Feeder snack shack employee Sarah Cool. “Means there's going to be a longer season.”
Snowbird gets about 500 inches of snow a year, but the mild winter — the warmest since 1874 — means it is at 58 percent of the average right now. On the patio, out-of-towners strip their layers to get comfortable in the warm temperatures.
Still, Snowbird is hoping to go out with a bang. It boasts the longest ski season of all the resorts and the goal this year is to be open through May.
