SALT LAKE CITY - KSL has learned that the University of Utah has hired New Jersey Nets assistant coach Larry Krystkowiak to be its next head basketball coach.

Krystkowiak (pronounced kris-KOH-vee-ak) signed a five-year contract late Saturday night to become the 15th head coach in Utah men's basketball history.

The deal, which includes Krystkowiak's base salary, radio and television appearances plus an Under Armour agreement, will pay $950,000 per year.

Krystkowiak is a name that should be familiar to the state of Utah - he played for the Jazz in the 1992-93 season.

Krystkowiak also interviewed for the Utes job in 2007, but was instead hired by the Milwaukee Bucks to be their head coach. His record while with the Bucks was 31-69. Among the players he coached was former Ute All-American Andrew Bogut.

Krystkowiak's experience at the collegiate level consists of two seasons at his alma mater, Montana, where he led the Grizzlies to the NCAA tournament both years (2004-2006) and getting one win in the tournament against Nevada. He compiled a record of 42-20 while at Montana.

Krystkowiak's other head coaching experience was in the CBA as the head coach of the Idaho Stampede in 2003-04.

A press conference introducing Larry Krystkowiak as the new men's basketball coach at the University of Utah will held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Jon M. Huntsman Center.

Krystkowiak was the Big Sky MVP three times and played in the NBA for nine seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, Utah Jazz, Orlando Magic, Chicago Bulls, and Los Angeles Lakers.
