HERRIMAN — A member of the Herriman High School football staff has tested positive for COVID-19, the Jordan School District announced Monday.

The district made the announcement after receiving confirmation from the Salt Lake County Health Department. Upon investigating the case, the district has begun to quarantine all practice and conditioning staff, as well as players who participated, until July 7.

The positive case is the first reported case of the novel coronavirus in Utah high school football.

Jordan School District began allowing teams to resume practicing for the fall season during the second week of June, shortly after the Utah High School Activities Association’s moratorium on voluntary summer workouts ended May 30.

Under the recommendation of Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and state superintendent Sydnee Dickson’s soft closure of all Utah schools, the UHSAA also canceled the spring sports season. Several private organizations, such as the Last Chance baseball tournament and Graduation Cup tournament for boys soccer, were played in place of a state tournament.

The health department will send a mobile testing lab to Herriman High to conduct free COVID-19 testing Wednesday, July 1, as a precautionary measure, Jordan Schools board member Darrell Robinson said in a Facebook post.

“Anyone who tests positive will be notified by the health department and asked to quarantine,” Robinson said. “We are in direct communication with the Salt Lake County Health Department and following all of their directives and recommendations.”

The test will be available to any student or coach who participated in practices or conditioning in the past week. Students must sign a consent form and release of information form to be tested, Robinson said.

Additional information can be found on the Jordan School District’s COVID-19 response page.
